What's interesting with us?

The commonplace statement that Riga is a small town is a relative truth. Small in area? Yes, it is. But it is not small in its age. Its small area concentrates so much on the history that it's impossible to realize and to investigate it within short period of time.

The Dome Square

[pic][01.jpg]The Old City is in the centre of the capital of Latvia, the Dome Square is its heart. This is the favourite place for the inhabitants of Riga. In spite of its historic status, the Dome Square is the place were all kinds of different events are organized: beginning with reviews of the amateur folk dance groups and ending with fashion shows.

Of course, the attention of the tourists is drawn by the Dome Cathedral the construction of which has started right in the year of 1211. Its height reaches as far as 87 metres. During the Soviet era there was a concert hall in the building. The spark of the cathedral is its organ built in the 80-s of the XIX century considered to be the biggest in the world. It possesses 124 registers and 6712 tubes.

The Riga Castle

[pic][02.jpg]The second subject in the list of significant sights of the Old Riga is the Riga Castle. It was founded in 1330 and has undergone repeated reconstructions. In the years of the Soviet era there was the Palace of Pioneers, at present there is the place of residence of the president of Latvia as well as the Museum of Latvian History and the Museum of Foreign Arts. The cozy garden attaching to the Castle adds a particular charm to this historic area with its benches and the shadow of the massive trees that gives shelter to lovers.

The House of Blackheads

One of the symbols of Riga is the House of Blackheads. It is situated in the Old City as well. The history of this place has become a real legend. The fist mentioning of it was found in the chronicle from 1334. During the World War II it was destroyed and restored upon the order of the town in 1999. In addition it can be noticed that it became not only dear but also quite expensive for the Rigans: in the beginning of the restoration everybody was given the opportunity to perpetuate his name by buying 1 brick for 1 lat. Thus, almost the whole city participated in the construction of the House of Blackheads.

The Jacob's Barracks

[pic][04.jpg]The Jacob's Barracks are situated in the very centre of the Old City on Torna Street. They were built in the XVIII century. At those times it was the longest building in Riga. The last restoration of the Jacob's Barracks took place in 1997. During all the holidays celebrated by the Rigans. Tornu Street totally changes its outlook - everybody can enjoy the scenes from the Bible and folk tales which fill in the street. And when the favourite holiday of all the Rigans - Ligo comes, the long tables are covered with the products produced by local food companies.

Bastejkalns Park

Right across the road from the Jacob's Barracks the green Bastejkalns Park is situated. To say that this place is beautiful is to say nothing. In the summer days it is overcrowded with people admiring its fabulous landscape - waterfall, small bridges and cozy paths. Take a walk along the picturesque embankment of the City Channel.

St. John's Yard (Jana Seta)

The John's Yard is situated in the Old Town between Skarnu St. and Kaleju St. It's one of the few places of the city where the old fortress wall is being preserved. Right here the castle of the first bishop of Riga (which was later given to the Dominican order). However, this small yard is famous not only with its history. In the hot days it's full with tourists and locals (lucky to find the place) having beer and snacks.

St. John's Church

St. John's church can be considered one of the oldest cult symbols of Riga. It is first mentioned in the chronicle from 1209. It's long and rich legend - it's something to be told additionally. Just to point out that during the period from 1968 to 1973 it had been completely restored and its height made more than 123b metres.

At present this church is used not only for religious purposes. Besides divine services lots of architectural exhibitions and classic music concerts take place there . Thus the true admirers of classic music have the brilliant opportunity to enjoy the acoustic of the church.

The Fountain of the Vermone's Park

[pic][03.jpg]The festive parties in the Vermone's Park is a tradition which became even more popular after its reconstruction. Besides, almost every Riga associates his childhood with this park. It's a true paradise for the kids: the rent of various toys, attractions and many other entertainments. Everybody who comes here is especially attracted by the fountain. It was established in 1869. It was dismantled in 1972 because it stopped functioning. In the summer of 1978 the area around the fountain was restored and well-designed. Then, the bronze copy of the fountain was established.

Cat House

Cat House is the building on Meistara10 which was constructed by the project of the famous architect F. Feiffel in 1910 as a place both for living and offices. It's on of the most popular objects for the Rigans. The building has peculiar history which attracts the attention of the tourists. The house was named after the two cats perched on the roof. Next to the house there is a beautiful public garden where local artists and craftsmen have the opportunity to demonstrate and sell their works. Or you can enjoy walking there like in a small open gallery.
